Hi! I am a total newbie in the linux world, so I don't know pretty much anything yet. My question is that how can I configure something, like my video card settings, screen refresh rate, mouse and keyboard etc? I tried to use this "XF86Config" command, but always ended up with the "No screens found" error when I tried to enter "startx" commmand and couldn't get in the Gnome So I reinstalled everything again and ran "startx" first. I'm afraid to use that thing again, but is there some other ways to configure stuff in Slackware or something? I'd like to listen music, but can't find the soundcard settings....
I haven't tried to use the "xf86config" after I reinstalled slackware. Because I'm afraid this error might show up again and I wont be able to get in Gnome then. After reinstalling, I just created an another user and typed "startx" and now I'm here.
</edit> no screens found usually means your Horz and or Vert rates
are not set properly for your monitor.........these have to be in
a certain range.......check your monitor owners manual for the specs......
or you put in too HIGH of a resolution range......IE 1600x1200
if you monitor cant support this........X wont start!!
And I doublechecked the sync rates from the manual.
Right now I'm like sitting in here (Gnome 2.4) and I have almost no idea what to do. I was a windows user before, but wanted to try out linux. You know, in windows, there's his Control Panel, where you can configure everything and stuff, but where is it here?
Well, first of all,I'd like to configure the screen's refresh rate a little. I suppose it is currently somewhere at 50 or 60 Hz and my eyes are hurting so badly.
In Slack with Gnome you should have a resolution option under the second option down on the main menu - ahh crap, I can't remember specifics - just a sec (switching back to gnome.)
Okay, under Applications -> Desktop Preferences -> Screen Resolution you can view your existing resolution and refresh rate. I can change the res but the refresh only has one option, 58 Hz (not too bad on a laptop.)
You can modify these settings in your XF86Config file manually with vi, vim, or pico (or whatever editor you like):
vim /etc/X11/XF86Config
I would suggest you remember any settings you tweak so if you get the "no screen" error you can change it back to where you are now.
Well, let's approach this carefully. First you want to open a terminal (should be one of the 2 default icons on your toolbar - black computer screen.) Once you've opened the terminal you'll want to switch over to the root user who has permissions to manually edit your XF86Config file:
$> su -
hit enter and put in root's password. Now that you are root (or su) then type:
$> pico /etc/X11/XF86Config
hit enter and you're looking at your XF86Config file - get familiar with it and be careful what you change as it could cause monitor damage.
Possible issues:
1. do you have the latest driver for your vid card?
2. is your hsync and vsync set to what your monitor can handle.
i also hava a smiliar question
after i installed the debian ,i ended up with the "No screens found" error
does xfree86 not support the board with intel 845G?
NO! DAMN! Now I get this "No screens found" error again...
I found out a way how to switch to KDE window manager and found some control panel thing and edited some menus in there, then it asked me to restart and pah! No screens found error.
Now I can't get in the GUI and I have to post this message in windoze.
How can I fix this? I tried to use the "xf86config" command million times, trying out different things and options, but still -- No screens found error.
Please just tell me what settings I need to use in xf86config. I am so mad right now that I need to take a break. I've been trying to get this thing working for hours and still there's this damn 'No screens found error'.
