You know it might also be a firmware bug. If you have Window$ you can upgrade it with that, or you can use wine as root (quite dangerous, but I've done it several times)

I logged in as a normal user for desktop usage, but I use Konsole terminal and Konquror as root with mount comands.

I have Windows on my laptop also, but I didn't found a compatible firmware with my drive: NEC ND-6500A
Current firmware version: 2.58.

If it's a laptop you need to get firmware updates from their site (for example dell, HP, etc), the drive manufacturer rarely offers firmware for these drives directly.
