problems installing RHEL 5 on Dell Dimension E521

Hello everyone,

I am new to linux and having problems installing RHEL 5 on a Dell Dimension E521. I wish to install this so that I can run my Engineering software programs CAD, CFD etc and generally become more familiar with the linux system.

After downloading the ISOs from the Redhat Network I tried booting with CD 1, tried the linux mediacheck command and the system hangs after a few seconds (it doesn't reach the mediacheck stage). The last few lines of output are as follows:

ksign: Installing public key data
Loading Keyring
-Added public key 6E92D7462CAE45D
-User ID Red Hat, Inc. (kernel Module GPG key)
io scheduler noop registered
io scheduler anticipatory registered
io scheduler deadline registered
io scheduler cfq registered (default)

I booted the CD on my friends toshiba laptop to see if it was a problem with the media but it runs with no problems on his, goes straight through to the media check graphical screen and the CD passes the check.

So I visited the Dell support website and updated my BIOS to the latest version hoping that this would solve the problem as others had suggested, but still no luck...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Daniel...

Thanks Lenard, I tried this command but still no luck and the same screen output. I've visited Dell Support but they say RHEL 5 hasn't been tested on my system and hence can offer little help. I've been to their (Dells) Linux forum and people are having various problems installing many of the major linux distros on the E521. I'm going to try Fedora and see if I have any joy but don't want to give up on the RHEL 5 since I have already purchased a license, possibly not a wise decision...

Thanks for your help

Daniel

I forgot to ask 32-bit or 64-bit for RHEL5?

me I'm running;

$ cat /etc/*release
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Client release 5 (Tikanga)
$ uname -a
Linux Aspire5100 2.6.22.1 #1 Tue Jul 24 07:33:20 EDT 2007 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

yea, I always build my own custom kernel as I do not like the kernel configuration choices and tweaks from Red Hat.
