Unhappy Cant type non-english characters in mysql monitor

Hello! I'm having a really strange problem with mysql monitor - I cant type any non-english language. When I type something (in mysql monitor opened in Konsole) Konsole's icon turns into a bell and nothing gets entered. Some keys make mysql clear itself, others act as the up/down key and so on. If I paste something in my language either
- it gets transliterated in english;
- only spaces are inserted;
- some previous command shows up, etc;
or nothing happens and Konsole's icon turns into a bell.

Whatever I try it's impossible to enter anything in my language in the mysql client. I dont experience any similar problems with any other app.
$ mysql --default-character-set=utf8 -u user -ppassword -h localhost database
mysql> CHARSET utf8;

Information:
MySQL version: 5.0.51
Konsole version: 1.6.6
Konsole's encoding: utf8
OS: Slackware 12.0

Thanks in advance!

I solved this problem by reinstalling MySQL (using the official packages, not the Slackware ones). Also, don't forget to update your lib paths:
Code:
echo "/where/you/installed/mysql/lib" >> /etc/ld.so.conf && ldconfig

Thank you for the resolution. As I was reading it, I was thinking "check konsole's encoding" but I see you had that covered.

If you enter the mysql "status" command in the client, you can see which encoding is used:

Code:
...
Server characterset:    utf8
Db     characterset:    utf8
Client characterset:    utf8
Conn.  characterset:    utf8
...
