hello!after next boot sound doesn't work anymore while rebooting in verbose mode says /usr/bin/alsactl load_state 1134 no soundcard found it was working be4.and after login says Error while initializing the sound driver, device /dev/dsp can't be opened I probe soundcard is there and it is ticked start arts soundserver on KDE startup.I run sndconfig but didn't help.does anyone have any idea what happened to the soundcard suddenly
thanks in advance
yes,I did!I had installed about 20 programs before next boot and after next boot no sound.
then I started to uninstall waht I had installed by one by(I had the list of installed programs)and everytime I uninstalled,I rebooted the computer.yes,in second try sound come back,it was surprise really .the programs name was watchdog releated with kenel,so that one caused the sound not to work.try the same method and I believe that it will help
I have a file "watchdog" here /usr/include/linux/watchdog.h
(there is also a module watchdog in /lib/modules/etc.../char/))
Newbie question: If I move the first file somewhere else just for checking what happens when I reboot I am wandering if there is a risk of problem (impossibility to boot for example)

Any suggestion ?
I don't think so it will cause a demage, but you should uninstall the whole package from mandrake control center or with kpackage.don't throw the file's pieces manually.as far as I remember wachdog doesn't ship with the installations cds if you installed it,uninstall and we will see then or try to remember what program you installed lately ?try from them.
can you tell a bit,in what point you lost the sound?

I have never had sound working (but I have always had the same error message as yours at boot). I have not installed myself a program not shiped with the installation cds containing the file "watchdog" (the file /usr/include/linux/watchdog.h was installed by glibc-devel). I am affraid that my sound problems comes from a conflict with another program, and that there is no chance to find which one it is.
command as root in konsole alsaconf and follow the instrctions,if sound won't start crate new user and reboot your computer then login to that new user and delete the old user and files, but remember to back up your files from /home directory!this may help.another solution is try to pick up the right sound driver for your sound card from mandrake control center/hardware/soundcard and configure module or runconfig tool.
good luck
After several weeks trying to improve my Linux installation, I have read hundreds of posts and spent too many hours almost for nothing. I have tried in particular what you propose, also compilation of the via driver and so on.
I discovered recently an error message by typing dmesg:
via82xx: Assuming DXS channels with 48k fixed sample rate.
Please try dxs_support=1 or dxs_support=4 option
and report if it works on your machine.
PCI: No IRQ known for interrupt pin C of device 0000:00:11.5. Please try using pci=biosirq.
unable to grab IRQ 0
VIA 82xx Audio: probe of 0000:00:11.5 failed with error -16
The first part "try dxs_support=1 or dxs_support=4 option" did not solve the problem.
Maybe the second part but I do not understand what it means. But it is better to start a new thread for that.
