I have downloaded/installed Mandrake 9.1. How do I get updates without purchasing a distro from Mandrake at this time. I just want to play/test it at this point. RH has a demo account for that. Does Mandrake have anything like it?
You don't need to pay anything to get the updates, they're free. If the built-in updater doesn't allow you to do it for free (I don't use it), get them from:
Getting updates is real easy if your connected to the web - just launch mandrake control center select the bottom icon software management and take your pick. Unlike rh demo account there is no need to register.
Also if you launch a terminal logon as super user you can use urpmi command along with the name of the application and it will download it straight away.
for packages not included in the distribution type in easy urpmi into google and follow the link.
The way mandrake updates really impressed me and was one of the main reasons i joined the mandrake club, so i could support mandrake development
i assume u know the updates function in the Mandrake Control Center on KDE (not the Kde control center)
well, you should do that immediately, because Mandrake in the ver 9.1 is not very safe though and actually needs some immediate updates, btw.
well and, if you are familiar with that, just go to http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/ and enhance your list of rpms , e.g. you can install KDE 3.1.3 or some other newer software, it explains itself, just go for it.
I recently upgraded to Mandrake 9.1. I went to the Mandrake Control Center / Mandrake update to get all the fixes. I go through all the motions, contact mandrake for list of mirrors, choose site, and get this message.
"There was an error while adding the update medium via urpmi.
This may be due to a broken or temporary unavailable mirror where Mandrake Linux version (9.1) is not yet/no more supported by Mandrake official updates.
Want to try another Mirror?"
I have tried all the mirrors, all times of day and night to no avail. I get the same message.
another is that you might want to refresh your sources
I'm not sure how from command line, but you can go into the Mandrake Configuration Center, choose Software Management -> software sources manager and in there click on the "Update" button.
This updates what each URPMI source actually has available and where. ( I think)
I have been using Mandrake since 7.1. I was rather disappointed with version 9.0 ( i did the Mandrake Control Center upgrades there) so I upgraded to 9.1 -( I did the upgrade not the install).
While Mandrake Control Center /Software Manager / Mandrake update worked fine in ver 9.0 it does not work in 9.1 (at least for me). While I upgraded - or refreshed - my sources. This is the first time ever that I have recieved this error. I am currently connected to www, easy Urmpi, (http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/index.php) and am manually upgrading.
I am really just wondering why I get this message from "all" of the mirrors for the security upgrades etc...
just goto the control center and remove any sources except the ones of your cdrom, actually you can replace them as well, with the "main" sources from plf..
then just try to add them all again.. using the urpmi commadline call.
