start settings for different WM in 9.1

Ok. Here's what I'm trying to do (and some things I tried)...

I use Mandrake 9.1 on my laptop, without a DM (ie: runlevel 3) and use startx to get into X. My default wm is Blackbox as defined in /home/****/.desktop...

I've been wanting to start up blackbox with bbkeys, Eterm and gkrellm running, so I added the following lines in .xinitrc:

bbkeys &
Eterm -f WHITE &
gkrellm &

So that now when I do startx, it's all good

BUT

They also start up when I use startx KDE or startx GNOME or startx failsafe.

How do I get them to start up ONLY in blackbox? Since Mandrake has a pretty convaluted X start up script/sequence, I haven't been able to pin it down and I was wondering if someone out there could help. I haven't found anything googling or on the mandrakeuser.org site yet either.

I tried testing for a $DESKTOP variable, but its not defined...(looking at the contents of the .desktop file I figured it would have been....)

I have never used blackbox, but if it's similar to fluxbox, you can put all of those commands in a separate executable script and name it whatever you want. Then point to that script in your blackbox init file. That way the commands will only be issued when you start blackbox, not KDE or Gnome.

look for something like this in your blackbox init file:

session.rootcommand:

and put the name of your script there. Ex:

session.rootcommand: ./home/liquidzoo/startupbb.sh

Here's another question, while we're learning.

Can you put in MANY lines like 'session.rootcommand:' or only one? (I suppose its a moot point since if you can put only one, you can always just point it to a script like you suggested.)

AFAIK, you can only have 1 there, but you can have as many as you want in the shell script.

Hmmmm I poked around a bit and I found only one file that has the line "session.rootcommand" in it and that's the blackbox style file I'm using (created by bbconf...) It used to have an Esetroot command (so that my Eterm background could be transparent).

I switched that to run a script called .bbstart and while the Esetroot command seems to run ok, the commands I copied from my .xinitrc file (posted above) didn't run.

I also tried adding the session.rootcommand in .blackboxrc (it wasn't in there before) and point it to .bbstart

Still nada...
