I've hunted down the many sure-fire fixes that abound on line, and tried them all.
Not one of them is working for me. I don't blame Mandrake/Linux as such, for I'm certain the root of the problem is my complete lack of knowledge re: Linux. I might follow the instructions, but have no idea what I'm doing. If something goes wrong, it's likely I won't even know it.
And something must have gone wrong because I can't get on line with Linux. The modem is working just fine in Windows XP (using it now).
Does anybody wish to take on a complete Linux newbie and help him get his Modem up and running? I'm willing to do a complete reinstall and start from scratch with a fresh install if that will help. But I will need considerable hand-holding...perhaps with step-by-step one-bit-at-a-time instructions to get this done. Almost certainly, multiple posts will be necessary.
I realize I'm not exactly selling this thing...but I'm being realistic about my Linux skills here. I really do need a charitable soul who remembers what it was like.
I'm having similar problems. I have just upgraded from RedHat 7.2 to Mandrake 10.1 community. I'm using a silver speedtouch 330 (or rather, I'm trying to use one).
The intersting thing is that both of the lights are green and steady -- which would seem to imply that things are working okay. However when I attempt to connect at the end of the conection configuration, it claims that no internet could be found.
I am reticent to try messing arounf with firmware etc since I suspect it might be something realy simple.
Does this sound like your problem, or are you getting no lights on your modem at all?
I have the silver modem also, and have solid green lights while in Mandrake 10.0.
I think that either Mandrake 10.x is either flawed in some way, at least with respect to this modem, or it's going to take an expert with plenty of patience to go through the installation one step at a time.
Frankly, I don't hold out much hope. So far, the Linux community hasn't been of much real help to me. I've visited plenty of websites, and tried a lot of "solutions". Nothing has worked, and I suspect this is mainly down to my inexperience with Linux.
Before you run his script, you will need to install pppd and bc.
bc is easy to find and install from your CDs. (MCC -> Install software, search for bc, and install it)
I found pppd here:
MDK 10.0 = ppp-2.4.1-13mdk.rpm
MDK10.1 = ppp-pppoatm-2.4.2-7mdk.rpm and ppp-pppoe-2.4.2-7mdk.rpm
Then run his script and answer the questions. Choose to have the connection start at boot time. You are done!
I did have a little problem with his script at first, there was mandrake specific stuff that was wrong, and I had to comment out a couple of lines. I have emailed him and he may have fixed the script, but if you get a "No USB Bus found!" error, then comment out the following lines in his script and rerun it:
# uname -a|grep "mdk" > /dev/null 2>&1
# if [ "$?" -eq "0" ]; then
# # Why do Mandrake have to rename standard utilities?
# LSPCI=lspcidrake
# fi
Thanks for the advice, I have now got it working. For the record:
I am using Mandrake 10.1 COmmunity, and the silver, rev4 spedtouch 330.
As you say, I had to install bc, I also had a few problems with the USB bus, I had to
lspcidrake -v | grep -i usb
and found I had an OHCI bus, which meant altering the script to reflect this. I then found that the firmware copied from my windows partition wasn't suitable, so downloaded the rev4fw.zip version... and then it worked, fantastic.
Hello chaps!
Nooww....
I'm running Mandrake 10.1, with a lovely burgundy Speedtouch 330...
I keep getting the dreaded 'USB not connected' message.
Tried commenting out the lines mentioned above, but still nada.
I was just wondering - what exactly did you chaps edit to get it working? You say some of the Mandrake-specific stuff needed correcting and then a bit later the script dealing with the OHCI usb section.
And of course, I have no idea which bits of which scripts you have played with.
Help! My wife is getting miffed because she can't get on the PCall evening while I pound my head on the keyboard day after day.
Well, I assume you managed to get your 330 running under 9.2, so you will be able to get it working, but we need to know more:
-What is giving you the 'USB not connected' message?
-Is USB working at all? lspcidrake -v | grep -i usb. Do other USB devices work?
-Is the microcode being uploaded? (Do the lights blink for a while?)
-Have you had a look in /var/log/messages? Anything pertinent there?
You could try adding some echo "I got to line 43 OK" comments in Steve Parker's script, or try commands from the script in a terminal to discover exactly what is going on.
I got tired of trying to get this script to recognise my USB port - since I KNEW it was working fine, so I just commented out all the USB checking and just set the variable to USB = UHCI.
Then it just worked...
Sheesh - I'm not a Linux expert (or even experience person...) but if every Mandrake user has to do this with a Speedtouch that can't be a good thing. Whole point of a script is so you don't HAVE to know how to program to set it up.
Good thing I did FORTRAN and BASIC programming I guess..
Happyy,
You just follow Steve Parker's instructions and run his script.
If you get the error "No USB Bus found!" , then you need to open the script with your favourite editor, and find the lines:
Code:
uname -a|grep "mdk" > /dev/null 2>&1
if [ "$?" -eq "0" ]; then
# Why do Mandrake have to rename standard utilities?
LSPCI=lspcidrake
fi
and then comment them out by inserting a # character at the start of each line.
Then rerun the script.
