Question sound problem with mandriva 2010

I have installed mandriva 2010 on my macbook pro. Mandriva is the only os, there is no OS X.

The most outstanding issue is the sound. Sound card is recognized according to MCC->Hardware. The driver is automatically selected: snd_hda_intel(alsa). However, I can't play any sound.

Any help is appreciated. I could give more information if needed. I searched the forum and google, but so far no success.

What happens if you open up the pulse audio volume control? Will it open and are the volume controls up? Also, what abouit kmix?

I get

connection failed:connection refused

if I click on pulse audio volume control.

Some how, I got the above "connection issue" fixed, but still there is no sound.

Running pulse audio volume, there is a red x next to sound icon, indicating the sound is muted. I can't get rid of that "red x".

I don't see "kmix" from gnome menu.

Yeah, if you're running Gnome then you won't get kmix!

Couple of suggestions:

1. From the commend line type

alsamixer -c 0

And unmute anything muted

2. If no joy with 1, try disabling Pulse Audio in the MCC and see whether that helps.

No luck for sound. I don't see anything muted from 'alsamixer -c 0'. I tried disabling pulse audio - no sound. I removed /home/alamj/.pulse as root - did not help.

Any other ideas?

The laptop is a macbook pro (mbp5.5). Sound was fine with mac, but I don't like mac for my purpose. So I installed mandriva 2010.

According to mcc->hardware: sound card is detected as MCP79 high def. audio. snd_hda_intel was selected by default.

Hi, I can think of another GNU/Linux module that might be in the way.

when you type...

lsmod

do you see pcspkr ?

If so, you may blacklist that module (pcspkr), allowing others to take control.

look for (with mandriva) /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-compat or /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-mdv

see that document to see how to black list a module.

Regards Glenn

Yes, there is pcspkr if I run lsmod. I did black list this in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-compact. Sound did not work. I rebooted the laptop too.

Hi, try again, but blacklist it in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-mdv

I have a feeling it may not be the problem, but it won't hurt to try.

If you have no joy, you might try the alsa-info.sh script.

You can get it from the website...

www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh

When you run it, type --help, to see the options available.

sh alsa-info.sh --help

I don't know how to debug the entire output, but if you paste it here we may find something.

Also, check the alsa wiki...

http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/Main_Page

see how you go.

Regards Glenn

Hi, I have tried in your direction, but no luck yet. I guess this might be related to NVidia and I tried loading snd_intel8x0 from MCC, but this did not show up in the following output.

I know nothing what to do with alsa-info.sh output and have posted the entire output here for help.

Hi, one glaring omission from your alsa script is...
Code:
!!ALSA Version
!!------------

Driver version: 1.0.20
Library version:
Utilities version: 1.0.21
Mine looks like this.
Code:
!!ALSA Version
!!------------

Driver version: 1.0.20
Library version: 1.0.21a
Utilities version: 1.0.21
Try and install the package to match your version with urpmi...
Quote:
lib64alsa2-1.0.20-1mdv2010.0.x86_64.rpm
lib64alsa2-1.0.21-1mdv2010.0.x86_64.rpm
lib64alsa2-1.0.21a-1mdv2010.0.x86_64.rpm
(Latest on My Machine, ver. 1.0.21a-1)

perhaps like this...

You may not need the dev packages...but you do need this one

lib64alsa2

Code:
urpmi lib64alsa2 lib64alsa-plugins libalsa-data
others available...

Code:
urpmi lib64alsa-plugins-pulseaudio lib64alsa-plugins-jack lib64alsa2-devel lib64alsa2-static-devel
Hope this gets it working, Regards Glenn

Hi,

Many thanks for your help. My alsa script now includes library:
!!ALSA Version
!!------------

Driver version: 1.0.20
Library version: 1.0.21a
Utilities version: 1.0.21

http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=22...4ff68ed749fc4c

I still have no sound.

One point:

urpmi alsa

failed - I retried several times. However, I can find any package from within MCC.

(I use mandriva for few years, but did never get sound working except with mandriva 2006)

Hi, yeah, Just alsa, my bad. I should have removed that, it was a list heading.

OK, if you have kde4,

go to the "configure your desktop" (screwdriver and spanner icon)

go to the "system notification", "player settings",

and change the option to "external player", type alsa in the box.

you may have to restart the window manager to test, logout of X and log back in.

The system startup sound is your first indication, as you may know.

You've tried turning off pulse in the hardware manager, and

I think the nvidia chip and kernel is fine, because the chip is recognised.

In my experience,

if the chip is not recognised by the kernel, no module is loaded, that's is all, no sound.

I had similar problems when I got this motherboard, it was too new, and I had to patch the kernel, and recompile to get it to work.

Then I had a similar problem with the Edirol (usb) sound box.

I was able to check my hardware with winxp, and of course, it just worked.

It took me 2 to 3 weeks each time, steep learning curve.

OK, lets check for missing packages using your rpm database.

first do...
Code:
rpm --rebuilddb
it might take a while to finish, remember no news is good news.

then search the database for missing libs.
Code:
rpm -Va | grep miss
this will look for missing libs etc.
This will take even longer, but sometimes can reveal "secrets"

After all of that, and trying to rectify any missing rpms....

you might find some gems in this script I used to figure out my sound system.

Please note, some of this is personalised to my system, but you can see the commands

you may run them individually and check the output.

Code:
#! /bin/zsh
# sh $HOME/bin/sound-info
# links to /home/glenn/build/sound-info

I generally ran this script with a redirector to a text file, for easy viewing and archiving.

you may need to adjust it to suit your system.
Code:
sh /home/glenn/build/sound-info > /home/glenn/build/sound-info-`date +%Y-%m-%d-%H`.txt
see how you go.

Hi, I believe only the following line is relevant.

missing /usr/src/hda_realtek-0.1/hda_realtek-0.1-mktarball.dkms.tgz

I checked that /usr/src/hda_realtek exists but the above .tgz file was missing. I am not sure how the folder got a place in /usr/src/.

During the boot time, by pressing ESC, I see that something like "hda_realtek......failed", but don't know how to pause or where to look into for the actual error message.

Below are the output from your script. I changed something related to mp3 - at this time I thought mp3 is not important (will be after getting sound).

I am still trying to understand, but thought you may be able to suggest something better.

The classic bug sound tester is to run the following commands:
list pci drake the driver your card uses by default/n
snd_hda_intel : nVidia Corporation|MCP79 High Definition Audio (vendor:10de device:0ac0 subv:10de subd:cb79) (rev: b1)

grep sound-slot /etc/modprobe.conf will tell you what driver it currently uses/n

Hi, it's looking like this is a software problem.

The hardware is being detected, from your script output.

This seems to be the sound chip module, snd_hda_intel

so, this points to a software config problem.

Now you may need to debug pulse in the "hardware manager"(MCC),

and/or the "configure your desktop" xine/gstreamer and alsa or kde default.

Hope this gets you closer to the desired result.

regards Glenn
