I need a modem thats compatible with Linux. What type/model should I get? Im running right now a Us Robotics 56K fax Modem.

What will I have to do in order to get the righ one for Linux and Windows? Or is there a way to obtain a connection on this current modem?

You need a hardware modem.. In general internal modems are software modems and external modems are hardware modems . There are exceptions to the rule but you should be right with just about any external modem and you should be able to get one with no problem.

External modems are also more tolerant of bad connections (noisy phone lines) than their internal counterparts, so they experience less dropouts. They also use their own power supply and being a hardware modem they don`t need to use any CPU power to function. Unlike software modems that are plugged into your computer cases power supply and have to use some of your CPU to work.

Just ask the sales guy in the store if the modem you are looking at buying is a hardware modem.

Software modems are also called winmodems. Don`t buy one of these, you already have one.

Ok, heres some scoop.

I called my PC's manufacturer and asked him if this was a Winmodem or not. I looked at my spec sheet and it was listed as:

US Robotics 56K Fax/Controller Modem

Ok, I asked hime 3 times if this was a Winmodem or not and he said no. And did came with a CD labeled as US Robotics but I looked at the CD label and no Winmodem was marked.

So, I only want this to Internet Connection to work and thats all. Thats all I want.

Some people are telling me that I could connect by using KPPP or the GNOME Dialer but I cant find it.

What needs to be done to get the modem that works for both Windows and Linux without spending too much $$$

If I go into a Electronics store, what modem should I look for? I know Hardware, but what type and model??? And how would I install this in my
PC?

Hm, you do seem a bit stubborn and unwilling to listen, but anyway...
If your modem is internal, then by MOST definitions it IS a winmodem. Period.
If it is external, then it is NOT Winmodem. It is as simple as that. Of course the manifacturer will NOT tell you it is a winmodem. If you go to MacDonalds and ask them if their "food" is unhealthy, do you expect to get the straight answer?

KPPP might NOT be installed on your system. If it is, then you will find it under Networking-->WWW. If NOT there, you will have to install it yourself. It's easy. Go to Configuration-->Packaging-->Install Software and search for KPPP.

If you want to buy an external modem, I personally use BestData V92.

Last but MOST importaint, heed the advice others gave you previously. DO NOT rush into things like you seem to be doing. Read some manuals first. Visit some boards, learn about your system. Buy and read a Linux book. It helps a great deal.

Good luck

I could not locate KPPP. I went to the right path you gave me. Nothing. Perhaps what Program group is it in because I looked everywhere.

I were to find the KPPP, will that get me a connection?

Or what about the GNOME Dialer?

I though the KPPP would solve the problem.

KPPP is the dial up program. It has nothing to do with having a compatible modem.

A hardware modem will work with both windows and linux.

A software modem is a modem that needs software ( a driver to run)

With an external hardware modem you just plug it in to the back of your computer and it will work. You just have to tell KPP where it is.

It is really no more difficult than that. And you definately do have KPPP on your install disks

Hi, I'm a linux newb too with a similar basic question: I have win xp now on a 60 gig HD (NTFS file system prolly). I am going to scan disk and defrag and get drakx to use 35 gigs of space for all the linux stuff. Now, my understanding is that there is no simple way to get files from say...the c drive to the home drive, is this correct? Is there any way to make a partition with 5 gigs or something that both can read and write to? Thanks

well, the description says it works with linux 2.3 and higher... you're using either 2.4 or 2.6, so you should be fine...

i just checked the wonderful linux questions hardware compatibility list for that modem you posted:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/sh...php?product=72

short answer, it works... long answer, looks like some distros, specifically mandrake, might have a couple issues recognizing it at first... seems to be easily worked-around... i'm just basing myself on a couple of the posts there... i checked the mandrake HCL and they list the 5630 as known hardware, but not the 5610... i guess this is cuz mandrake tends to make lots of changes to the kernel... i'm not sure...

for the record, i've just pointed unixfreak to the rpm file with the drivers for the 5610B:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...postid=1088519

the direct link to the file is:

ftp://ftp.usr.com/usr/dl15/LNUX_3ComMdm-1.0-1.i386.rpm

There are two ways to change the time for boot selection. First, that is down inside the lilo config files, which I do not know well enough to tell you how to do it. It is basically a case of editing the config file and changing the 10 to something else.

Next, if you look in the Control Center (for example, Mandrake Control Center for Mandrake) there should be a BOOT option, and in there will be a place where this time is set, so you can change it.

The timeout can be adjusted this way by:

opening /etc/lilo.conf in a text editor as root
looking near the top of the file where it says TIMEOUT=xxx (where xxx is the number of TENTHS of a second)
changing xxx from, say, 100, to 300 will change the timeout from 10 seconds to 30 seconds, etc.

save the file

Next time you boot, you should have the time you desire to make your choices!
