I bought a new TV tuner card, Pinnacle PCTV Stereo, based on Philips saa7134 chipset. It was properly detected on my Mandriva Linux 2006 in both 2.6.12 (distributed) kernel and 2.6.14-4 (official from kernel.org) after recompiling the first one. But i can't get full screen on display. I tried several applications such as XawTV, Kdetv, Zapping etc. The Tvtime application can't show any thing at all whether all applications works properly, but can't display at full screen on my 17 inch philips monitor. I am using Mercury 815e motherboard which includes i815 graphics controller. My system have 256 MB RAM. I am running P3 1 GHz.
I tried my best to get the full screen work with my quite linux configuration skills. Is that may due to some video memory problems?.
or may due to the frame grabber problems?. I am guessing. Please help me to have a full TV experience in Linux. First i have to solve this problem and have to start using wonderful applications such as Myth tv.
One more thing..... My xorg.conf file sets video RAM as 16384K. I tried to increase it. But the Xserver crashed. And there is line in configuration files as follows...
-----------------------------------------
# TV fullscreen mode or DVD fullscreen output.
# 768x576 @ 79 Hz, 50 kHz hsync
ModeLine "768x576" 50.00 768 832 846 1000 576 590 595 630
I have an older Pinnacle tv card. I can't remember whether it would get a "full screen" in Linux or not.
I know in windows when running a resolution of 1024/768 it would leave about an inch or more around the edges.
One thing I did in windows is change the resolution to 640/480. I right clicked on the icon and went to the windows compatable mode and change the resolution ot 640/480. Everytime I click on the icon it changed the screen to 640/480, then it would fill the whole screen. I don't know whether this works in Linux or not (changing the screen resolution).
Thanks for the response. I am waiting for the past few weeks to get any kind of help. You are the first one to do that. Thank you.
If i could change the entire resolution of the Linux desktop to 640x480, i may able to get a screen wider than this.. But that is not the problem... The application to watch TV support different screen sizes up to maximum around 752x(some no. i can't remeber exactly). But when i tried to change the screen sizes, (there is mo resolution option for the mentioned TV watching applications) no effect in result. But when i tried Open Suse 10, it just works fine, i mean i can get the full screen in a graphic resolution of 1024x768. But the not only the Xserver, but also the entire Linux system hangs when i tried to use some facilities given by kdeTV application. Xawtv shows some messages when i tried to invoke it from the console like " video grabber unavailable. Try increasing video memory " soemthing like that. But my system is working with maximum available video memory. If i change resolution of my system to the lower 640x480, it will affect other programs also like Graphic Editors.
I don't know what to tell you on that. My previous response was just a longshot anyway. I'm pretty new to Linux so I'm not much help. Hope you can find someone that can give you some good information.
That doesn't matter. I am happy to see that you are putting a nice response to my threads with your limitation. That is very fine and i am appreciating you for such committment.
Hello, I have a Hauppauge PVR-150 I am using with Mythtv, and I have the same problem. Desktop and all dvd video plays fine.....but when i watch tv there are 2 black bars on the left and right. The same goes for when I try to watch recorded video files from it on the tv. The strange thing is if I copy the mpeg file and burn it on to disc and watch it on dvd.....it plays fullscreen?
