He's just trying to make you the super user - i.e. root
I was going to do the same - then start another X-session so you could use KWrite and get the job done easily and without the command line which you seem a bit timid about...
Bur you already are so proceed from there - or let me know if you want to try to do it the Nimmer way

I received an error message when I entered startx''it said fatal error:
server is already active for display 0 If the server is no longer running remove /temp/.x0-lock and start again
