Can you duplicate what you are trying to describe here with Mandrake 9.2?

Thanks,

He's just trying to make you the super user - i.e. root

I was going to do the same - then start another X-session so you could use KWrite and get the job done easily and without the command line which you seem a bit timid about...

Bur you already are so proceed from there - or let me know if you want to try to do it the Nimmer way

Okay then we try and do it my way...

Go to the CLI window (the "DOS" window) and let me know when you are there!

hmmm... Mkay

Then try to log out of X (i.e. from the graphical desktop)

- Don't shut down, don't restart. Just log out!

And inform me if you are at the CLI ("The black screen")

It should be one of the options where you usually choose to shut down or restart the machine...
