Nvidia driving sitting on my desktop
 

Hey guys I need help.

I have my nvidia driver I just downloaded sitting on my desktop and I can't figure out how to extract it or install. But, it sure looks pretty sitting there.

I'm not sure if this is the correct file I download, but it reads as follows:

NVIDIA-LINUX-x86-4496-pkg2.run

Is this the right downloaded file for NVIDIA?

Can someone help?

Start your box in command line mode - If your box loads up in graphical mode, you need to edit your initab...

Find the following and set the runlevel to 3.

# Default runlevel. The runlevels used by RHS are:
# 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
# 1 - Single user mode
# 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)
# 3 - Full multiuser mode
# 4 - unused
# 5 - X11
# 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)

id:3:initdefault: <------- Change this to 3

Run the file you've downloaded - This can be accomplished via mc if you don't know how to run a file by itself. Type mc - go to the directory where you have placed the driver - Simply select the file and press enter...

Answer yes when you've read the agreement if you wan't the driver to install

Edit the files suggested in the readme the way the readme suggest

This can also be done in mc

After that try typing startx and you should be on the road

Oh yeah after changing the initab you need to reboot :) - Then continue as described

Okay sounds to me like you are starting in graphical mode...

To start your system in command line you need to edit the initab file - You can find it in /etc/

Use gedit or another text only editor load the file initab and change the runlevel to 3 as described above.

Save the file and follow the advice above - And remember the Readme/Install information... they have an installation explanation on nvidias homepage as well but fire away if you are stuck.

After editing the initab - Reboot and follow the above explanation

I just have my computer on whether it's in the graphical mode, I'm not sure. You have to remember that this is all foreign to me. Graphical mode to me sounds like an installation mode and if that's the case, I'm not in the graphical mode.

I'm just looking at my desktop and I have no idea how to get to the nvidia driver.

I could mail you a number but I'm in Denmark so it would prolly cost ya a fortune to call me unless you are situarted in Denmark...

However I understand you are in the correct mode and that you are looking at the command line - no graphics - And that is good!

1) Where did you save the nvidia driver to when you downloaded it?
2) does typing mc have any effect?

I am starring at my PC as if were on in the ready to use position. It is off-line meaning off the internet.

I saved the driver to my desk-top.

If you can give me directions in a way that I could understand it, I'd appreciate it.

Pretend I am flying a 747 jet and I have no knowledge of flying a plane and your the expert.

I'll sit here and wait on my alternate PC.

Remember, I saved the nvidia driver to my desktop, oh and yes, the phone call would be tremendous.

Are you sure you are not in graphical mode - Are there any icons on your screen???

Where do I place the MC at?

I scroll down to KDE start-up menu at the lower left hand corner of the screen, what do I open up to start or enter this MC command?
