What is the modem driver? If it's a source file, you will have to do something like:

tar -xzvf foo.gz.tar

Then read the README thoroughly.

If it is an RPM try:

rpm -ivh bar.rpm

what if it is a .inf file??? Dave

Forget that question. I'll answer myself. It is a DOS/Windows driver. I assumed since I bought from a Linux user it would be Linux driver. I opened the file and read it. It is clearly not Linux Script. Duhhh!!! Just an senior moment. Dave

You could try this site:

Conexant makes cheap chipsets which are built into a lot of modems (including softmodems) with different brand-names.

There is now another company Linuxant which produces Linux drivers in different Linux flavours for the various modems which are built on Conexant chipsets :

http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/

This website will identify if you have a Conexant chipset modem and supply a free basic driver (limited to 14kbps data - try this one first for compatibility) or a paid-for driver ($14.95 for 56kbps with fax). It is unusual for my modem connexion to get more than 3 to 5 kbps anyway and I think this is not rare.

Thumbs up

Sometimes it pays to be stubborn

I changed to a USR Sportster 56k Ext. modem and finally reverted to Mandrake 8.1 and am online with Linux after a year of on and off attempts to get Linux to work!

As for connection speed, I live in a rural area with marginal telephone service and I generally connect at about 48kbs.
