Modem trouble - RH 9.0

Hello, Linux nupty here who has just tried (for the first time) to install Linux on a laptop (Fujitsu - Siemens Amilo D).

Everything went well (Video and sound cards located ect) untill I tried to use the 'Internet configuration wizard'. At this point I realised the modem does not exist as far as RH is concerned.

I am new to this but I guess I have a winmodem or something. I tried doing some searches on the net but I can't find out the actual make (other than that it is a 56k v.90 international modem) of the said modem.

I just need a few pointers really. Cheers.

winmodem

You do have a win modem and unfortunantly I can not recomend I solution. I have a dreaded winmodem in my Toshiba laptop and have been unable to get it working.

This is the link to a package that claims that it can get winmodems working on linux, however I did not have much luck:

http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/

It should be noted however, that my lack of luck in this department is totaly related to my lack of effort. I work and live at a boarding school with a T1 line so I have never needed to use the modem. Have a go at it and let me know if works out for you.

Thanks for the advice.

I have come to the conclusion from reading posts on the web that the best thing to do is just get an external USB modem. Hopefully RH 9.0 will be ok with it.

Maybe trying to get my dreaded winmodem running is something for a rainy day in the future when I eventually have half a clue as to what I am doing.

(no wonder my new laptop said 'designed for XP!!)

Finally got the blasted winmodem to dial up to the net!

82801db ac'97 modem (rev 02)

Used slmdm-2.7.10.tar.gz courtesy of linmodems.

Changed line 75 of amor_init.c

From 0x2486 to 0x24C6

Installed and after some tinkering I was able to activate the modem.

Very relieved
