Modem seems to be up and connected but can't load pages in Mozilla or ping a thing
I've got a 536ep Intel modem installed and apparently connected on Mandrake 9.1 but I can't seem to access the net. At first I got an immediate unknown host error while pinging yahoo.com or trying to load the site in Mozilla. I then turned off the firewall and after that it gives no warning but times out. Anybody have any idea what the problem could be here.
I had same problem.
Take a look, if you have some needless networking going on in your machine. In my case, the computer tried connectin internet via LAN and ignored ppp connections. I'm not sure, if this was the really problem, but now all are OK, after I disabled LAN etc.
I installed this for a friend using my dsl line and thought that that could also be the problem and it may in fact still be but I deactivated the eth0 interface (also at boot) and changed the connection type to modem. Running ifconfig showed me what I had expected: only lo and ppp interfaces. I'll double check this tomorrow.
Are there any other places I should check? And thanks for the replies. I'd really like to get this fixed.
If you can connect but not see web pages you may have to manually write your dns ip address into your /etc/resolv.conf file the sybtax is:
nameserver 203.96.152.4
your ip dns address will undoubtably be different.
try surfing to sites using their ip address - googles is 216.239.53.99 if you can surf using numbers then your problem is cerainly name resolution and the above fix should work. :-)
Hi guys. It looks very like what happenned to me. With lan enabled I got no internet trafic through the modem, in fact the trafic was being drived to the lan card! This is a "default route" related problem. Try to isolate the problem looking at the output of netstat -rn (as root) with the lan enabled first with no internet connexion working and then try it again with connexion estabished. If you are not familiar with this, paste it in a post. Of course you'll like to mask your local ip adress with something like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. You'll find the fix in: http://www.qut.edu.au/student/qdial/kppp.html (STEP 1)
I'll try that tomorrow. I was thinking along the same lines and tried randomly trying IP addresses in the 2xx.xxx.xxx.xxx range. Could be that my game of lottery was unsuccessful. I'll try it with the google IP tomorrow and report back.
OK, here it is. The problem is the nameserver issue. I connected using the google.com IP address given above and it worked.
I had understood that when connecting to a provider you are assigned to 2 nameservers automatically. I see now that that's not (always??) true. In drakeconnect there are fields for 2 nameservers (DNS). That should fix everything. I'll test it asap and get back to you with the results.
For those in Germany you can find this info at www.billiger-surfen.de at the bottom of the details page for each provider. Some only provide one DNS but that should be all you need anyway.
OK, I was able to test the above and I actually got it working but ran into another problem. I entered the 2 dns addresses into kppp's dns section and chose manual instead of automatic this time. I left the server name blank.
What's happening is when I connect and look into /etc/resolv.conf I see the line "#kppp temp entry" (or sth. similar) and then the nameservers I entered in kppp. OK, all good. I open up Mozilla enter google.de, dns works and I get the page. Again, all good.
Here's where it get's strange. After the initial page it stops working and I'm back to where I started. The entries are still in /etc/resolv.conf but as before I can't ping anything. (forgot to check pinging IP's, though) I reconnected several times and each time the same. On connect I enter:
Today I played around with the modem again and at first it seemed to work, for a whole 5 minutes. Then it again stopped responding. Also, when I ping using the IP number there is no response. Only after letting it ping for a few minutes do I get any output. The output is something like this:
sendmsg: No more space in buffer
Does anybody know this?
Also, on boot up I get a warning that 536ep.o is unresolved or something. Since the modem itself seems to be working I haven't really worried about it. Could that be a problem?
This is all on a Siemans scenic with 450mhz and 128mb RAM.
