Tried your suggestion about changing to digital audio extraction in audio CD options. The only result was that xmms disappears every time I hit the "play" button!
I think that's an issue with the command used to launch it in the menu. Change it to plain "xmms" instead of the other one. That's what fixed it for me.
Originally posted by salparadise i created an incident at mandrake expert saying that whereas under mdk9.2 i could play audio cd's in totem and xine, i couldn't under mdk10
this is exactly my same experience. i can't just 'go buy a cable' as many suggested as i'm using a laptop.
for the moment I am forced to play cds with xmms but i hope to find another answer soon ...

that happens ito me if I had xmms configured to use the wrong OUTPUT plugin.
best choice for me is to tell xmms to use arts (when i'm running under kde).
I've tried the digital extraction trick, but, depending on the output plugin, it either doesn't play, or just disappears when I hit the "play" button. xine doesn't work. I can't get the alsa gui to work either, just keeps telling me it can't find some file or other. I've loaded everything with alsa in it's title from Mandrake, so your guess is as good as mine.
I'm thinking of treating myself to a nervous breakdown.

Success at last! Using xmms, (KsCD still not functioning, though).
Set Kmix as follows on output switched everything off exept master, master mono and PCM. On advanced, switched everything off exept input sources (don't know how necessary this was). On xmms set cd audioplayer configuration to digital audio extraction and OSS mixer. Set Output plugin to ALSA 1.2.9. Switched on cd in Alsa mixer GUI (mind you, I had to reload the OS to get THAT working!) and now I can play cd's!
However, I should not have to play silly buggers to get a pretty basic function of any OS up and running. I really REALLY hope that Mandrake get it sorted before the release of the stable version of 10. I like this version of the OS very much indeed and hope I don't have to muck around like this when the "official" release appears.
A big thank you to everyone who has posted suggestions on this thread. Between you all, you have solved a most irritating problem!
I installed mdk10CE about 4 times, lots problems, including could not read from either cd drive.
The last tkime I installed, I selected the options to install the 2.4.25 kernel, and solved most of the problems. Can read cds, play music etc. Music required that I poke "mute" buttons in kmix until the constant squeal stopped.
Problem now is how ti install NVIDIA driver so that tuxracer will work.
