Here's a weird one. Just installed Mandrake 10, hoping it would solve "lack of driver" problems I had with 9.1 and it has. But...
I can't get it to play CD's. The soundcard (Realtek AC97-VIA VT 8233) seems to be well served by the driver, games, boot-up, all other sounds are loud and clear, but CD's will not play!
My CD rom drive does not have an external speaker socket. It functions perfectly as a CD player in Windoze (I have a dual-boot system). As it is not a hardware problem and as the soundcard is correctly configured, I assume it has to be something to do with configuring the software CDplayers (none of them work in Mandrake) but I've no idea where to start.
i agree about the analog sound cable from your cd rom drive to the mobo. Windows don't need that cable, since the audio signal travels along ide cables. look for it inside your pc chase
Ah, got a problem there. My box is a Fujitsu-Siemens (don't make me go into why I have a proprietry box) and it has a nice little seal that voids the warranty if it is broken, so I can't get into it. Also, the sound works fine with SuSE 8.2.
After my own experience playing CD's last night, I agree with whansard. I had almost no sound coming out of my speakers playing an audio CD, but just enough to know it was getting something. I checked the mixer program and the CD audio was on about 1%. I installed Mandrake 10 last Friday, and last night was the first time I've used the CD player and the mixer software. I was surprised to find the default input settings so low.
Ohhh, maybe you should tell Mandrake(bugs.mandrakelinux.com) and they can point you to a solution.
Did you try using a different window manager/Desktop. Did you try using the OSS drivers instead?
are you using kscd ?? or some other program
I had the same problem... but kscd was the only thing that would not play the cd's.. all other apps would
make sure it is using the right device in the setup window... it usually defaults to /dev/cdrom
I had to change mine to /dev/scd0 to get it play, but now it works great
