Loging as root and an error booting.

How do I log as root cause I'm using KDE3.2 and when it boot it only appears my nick and the avatar and then I click there and log as regular user. How I log as root?

Also when booting I hit ESC for verbose mode and everything says ok but when says starting interfave eth0 it says FAILED. What may happen???

I searched for this on Google. Here is the answer: http://vsbabu.org/mt/archives/2003/0..._90_to_91.html - you will have to scroll down the page.

Why do you need to login as root? Why not just open a console and use su to temporarily run as root? It is much better security wise.

Log in as root: Mandrake set up root as a 'hidden user' but it's still a valid login. Simply type 'root' in the username space, enter your password & you should be in.

'Error setting eth0' usually resolves itself once you are up & running. eth0 is your ethernet card, it must be working, you appear to be able to post!

To XavierP.... IMHO there ARE valid reasons for sometimes logging in as root, one of which is if your are doing a lot of setting up it is easier if you are logged in as root rather than in a shell. You also have full access to all the gui tools when logged in. Although Mandrake does it's best to discourage use of a gui as root, I don't agree. I feel Linux is difficult enough for a beginner to learn without also demanding that the nOOb get used to the oddities of vi &/or emacs just to edit lilo.conf or fstab when they can do the same job easier with Kate. Gui's are not/should not be something to be afraid of and working as root should not always be limited to CLI.
Having said that, it is true that there can be a security risk working logged in as root, but only if you are actually on line at the time. Even then, I believe the risk is actually rather low, especially if you have an operating firewall. As a Linux system you are immune to any Windows virus so the only real risk is from hackers. Even running 'fully exposed' you are much safer than any Windows system which is alway operating as root.

The root username is "hidden". Just type root as username and then your password.

OK I figured it out now in case anybody needs it what you need to do is go to system/configuration/kde/system/login manager. once there you go to users you'll see root marked with an x you uncheck that box and thats all now root is an option at the login screen.
