Apt-get and Mandrake?

I was just wondering if it was possible to use apt-get with Mandrake? I have seen it listed with Red Hat, but never for Mandrake.

I am running Mandrake 9.1, and am rather new at all this, so any help you could offer me would be appreciated! Thanks

I don't see why you want aptget though. Mandrake has a tool called urpmi which is extremely powerful and easier to use than aptget.

I was able to open the tool, however is there a GUI for it? I can struggle through command line interface, however a GUI would make life easier. I tried the -x switch that I found in the help menu, but that resulted in "urpmi: unknown option "-x", check usage with --help" which is how I found it in the first place.

Sorry I didn't mention it. The gui frontend is called rpmdrake. you can call it from a konsole window or, even easier, from Mandrake control center. Just go to software management.

you need to set up software sources if you want to install things that are not on the install CDs. For an easy way of doing it, go to:

That's a really useful link, however what if the place that you downloaded from isn't on the list? I got my ISOs from ftp.uwsg.indiana.edu and that is not included. Is there a way to tell what core and configuration is installed?

don't worry. the isos are exactly the same on all the mirrors (hence 'mirror' I guess). The 'core' is what's on the CDs. The contrib, plf, updates, etc. are things that are not on the 3 download cds.

edit: sorry, it's not 'core' but 'main' which is what's on the cds.

but from what i've read apt-get takes care of dependencies, and i have been having lots o problems with the rpmdrake....errors in install and the like, and the lists are limited there i have been trying to get apollon with all of the dependencies and they are a pain in the neck to fill all of teh dependencies

urpmi, or rpmdrake, does take care of dependencies. But you must set up software sources so that it can get the needed files, though. So use easy urpmi setup (link in my post above) and add as many sources as you can. Then use rpmdrake to install.
