D/loaded and burnt the ISOs for Mandrake 9.2 RC2 and it just hung before going to the "check for updates" screen. Three times!!
Thank god I had the 9.1 installation disks to hand which worked without a hitch - I'd recommend installing 9.1 and then downloading the new kernel for 9.2 RC2 afterwards - but only if you're brave! RC2 as it indicates is still a beta so I would wait for the final 9.2 release - you only have to wait until the end of September I think - can anyone confirm the date for the release of 9.2 final??
I installed RC2 on three different machines I too got the random failing of install packages on the first machine. But on the last two it loaded with no problems (Other than the Nis bug) and in less than 20Min.
yeah, thankfully i'm just running it in a vmware solution until the final comes out, since i can't install 9.1 cuz of my MB/RAM/VIDEO card combination. lucky me! lol it figures, i wanna run linux, (mandrake specifically) but can't until 9.2 comes out. hopefully it will be soon!.

LOL I'm in the same boat ... Mandy 9.1 won't install on my machine at all but 9.2RC2 went on without a hitch! Go figure.
As to random failure of install packages - yeah I had that happen - really annoying and frustrating too. Hehe, here's a nice example: I specified "expert" installation thinking that I would be "in command" of my package installation. ok, I go ahead select the packages I want - BTW, was REALLY surprised that "konsole" didn't make the auto-install list when selecting KDE package, and guess what?
I get through the whole installation only to find out "konsole" and a bunch of other packages didn't get installed as selected.
Oh well, hope they fix that by final release of 9.2 ..
And for God's sake Mandrake people - UNMUTE the sound!!!!!
Terminal missing is an identified bug, hope they will correct it (cannot do any *serious* work with linux yet without it).
The sound is not mute any more, they made the choice to put it at 80%, which should be available in 9.2rc3 (look for mute sound on http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/query.cgi ).
I never use "check for update" as my modem is not correctly configured, do it at post-install... rc3 may solve this as my bug was taken into account...
So there will be RC3 or is it going straight to release like it was from 9.0 -> 9.1?
BTW, other packages that were not installed (bug?) as specified:
libpython
python
aumix
sndconfig
k3b (k3b setup was not installed - a separate module??)
baddest of them all:
select multiple lib packages for installation (once 9.2RC2 is up and running) and the system will hang. If you leave everything with the belief that the system is just "thinking", the screen will turn all sorts of colors and you won't be able to reboot MDK9.2RC2 anymore. (I got burned twice doing that!)
