KDM won't start (10.2RC2)

Hi all,

After installing the NVIDIA driver, KDM, and all other DM's refuse to start. I've messed around with DrakConf as much as I care too. Syslog says:

kdm[5751]: IO Error in XOpenDisplay
kdm[5751]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
kdm[5751]: Display :0 cannot be opened
kdm[5751]: Unable to fire up local display :0; disabling.

The Nvidia splash screen does not come up either. I can startx without problems and the driver works fine (accelerated 3d).

Thanks,

Erik

I prefer DM over KDM since KDM has always been a pain in the butt and errors out alot.

Try that instead for the Desktop Manager.

Yeah, I tried that. I can't get any DM to launch. I get the same syslog entry whatever one I use.

Had the same problem.

Add "nvidia", without quotes, to /etc/modprobe.preload

That worked for me.

I posted a message about this as well over here by accident instead of in this thread. But I'm having the same problem with Mandriva Limited Edition 2005. It happened, though, after I did a live update type thing to update sofware packages. It worked fine before.

I too use an nVidia card. I'm going to poke around and try some of the suggestions too. Hopefully something worked. But I think it's a config problem. Something shutting down display 0: before X can grab control over it, from what I saw in my error messages (in the other post). I'm not sure.

Update:

Thanks, CAM_PIN as your post worked for me as well. Now it boots into X just fine.
