You may have noticed the addition of a little blue thumb in posts here at LQ. This thumb simply allows you to thank another LQ member for help they've given you. We're still looking for feedback on this method of recognition, so the feature should be considered beta at this time.

nice, I had seen things like "Accepted answer" in other forums, and usually scrolled down till that post if I had a similar problem to the question, I like this "thanks" way also.

Isn't it a little redundant?

I mean, if somebody posts a helpful response to a question the asker usually comes back with something like a "thanks, that worked" post or similar.

I am sorry to say that I think the site is becoming a little too 'busy' or cluttered. The list of links on the right seems to keep on growing with all the social stuff and blog links in addition to buttons to rate the thread, tag the thread, thank somebody etc etc.

I don't see ads on the site but I imagine for those that do it might be getting a little overwhelming.

(Just my tuppence worth, still think LQ is a great resource)

You would have thought that everyone would post back with a thanks, but it is far rarer than you would think or expect. Having a single button to press should, in theory, make it much simpler to thank someone and so be something they are more likely to do. It's an experiment - if it proves to be a failure then I'm sure Jeremy will discontinue it. OTOH, if it shows in technical threads that some posts are of more value than others, it will help people to find answers more quickly rather than post threads that have been asked and answered previously. And, finally, it's nice to receive a thank you every now and again.

My thoughts as well.
I don't need a ('nother) "social networking" site, I want a technical reference. LQ was a great assistance when I was starting out, so in return I try and help where I can.
I don't need the ego massaging "extras". jeremy apparently feels he needs to continually offer these "goodies" to attract/keep the (short) attention spans of those comparing LQ to the other offerings.

A pity really.

I hate it already -- not the idea, the implementation: The "The Following N Users Say Thank You to <name> For This Useful Post:" box in the left panel of a post almost doubles the height of some posts. This clutter makes it difficult to read threads.

One of the great things about LQ, compared to, say MepisLovers (both use vBulletin), is that Jeremy has chosen to put the poster info. box to the left of the post, not above it. This allows/enables/encourages good mental concentration on the content; which in turn makes for better answers.

It's bad enough that there is no rule about size of sig. blocks; not even the use of double spacing & huge fonts. Now I have scan past the "thank you" blocks as well.

Let's take Jeremy's OP in this thread as an example: When I enlarge it to the point that I can read it comfortably (I'll 0x40 next March), the "Thank You" text (not the names themselves) becomes the biggest boldest font on my screen, bigger even than the title of the thread. Is that what is intended? Although I suspect that this is a CSS problem, I don't know enough about CSS to say for sure; I just know that what I see detracts from the usability of the site.

Suggestions that would cure the problem:

• Change the CSS (if that's the cause of the large font).
• Add mechanisms to suppress display of the "Thank You" blocks.
  • Always.
  • In a given thread.
  • For a given post.
  • To a given user.

syg00, we do try to continually add new features and incorporate new technology while staying razor focused on our core mission. We never add something just to add it, there's always a driving reason (and we always listen to feedback).

archtoad6, it was way too big. I've made it smaller and will look into adding the ability to collapse the box.

@archtoad6, you can turn the sigs off. An example of jeremy listening to "feedback" - I suspect I was one of the first users when he made this option available.

Just to add, there is a size limitation on sigs - both in terms of characters and number of lines.
