You want feedback? I don't use "Mark Forums as read". I don't care what you do with it. I use mail reminders. I imagine it's for people with more time than me.

I used "Zero Reply threads" when it was on the Quick links, but it vanished for a while, and I hadn't noticed it back.

I use "My subscribed threads" particular when your mail reminders barf, or when I don't want mail tomorrow.

I then poke a nose in where I need to ask, or on the few forums where I can contribute meaningfully. I have a background with Electronic hardware so some stuff is clear to me when others are guessing.

I imagine my habits are different because I'm under GMT/UTC (Ireland), and most of your posts come from the Excited States or near it.

business_kid, members use LQ in many *many* different ways, which is often one of the challenges with making changes.

I want only to see threads that have changed since my last visit. Others like the new presentation method. A profile option would accomodate both.

Manually marking all threads as being read is an unconvenient extra step. Actually two steps for people who keep JavaScript disabled because the top level Quick Links link has to be selected before the Mark Forums Read link is available. Even if the Mark Forums Read link was readily available, that still requires an extra step every day to change the view.

I visit only one forum and the old view let me know immediately what was new. I never use the View New Posts option. I never had to manually maintain my visits as I do now with the new view.

I vote for a profile option or a return to the old method.

And thanks for LQ!
Unfortunately a per-member profile option is not viable. Thanks for the feedback.

Is the new view mode staying or are people still deciding?

A final decision has not been made, but so far more members seem to be in favor of keeping it.

I'm liking It.

Now I can truly see what I have read and what I have not.

On a side note, I'm glad to see that we now have another feature that I've always hoped for:

Now you don't have to wonder as you are reading a thread "Is this the original poster", and don't have to go to the first post to find out.

That's not a new feature, it was here ever since I first came to LQ.

hehe I just then noticed it. I've been wishing that feature was on another forum I frequent, now I saw it here and thought it was new.

I imagine they do. Hence I made no suggestions, just provided feedback.

Personally, I prefer the old method. I use "View New Posts" pretty much every time I visit and the new system means that I see a lot of posts (12 pages or more) each time. I much prefer to only have the new stuff shown when I use it. My tuppence-ha'penny FWIW.

If you stop at the "The threads below have not been updated since your last visit but still contain unread posts" line then you would be looking at the same posts as you would have seen in the old system, no?

Yes, and it is more accurate the new way. With the old system, sometimes it would malfunction and I would see no new posts at all.

Indeed, but I prefer not to have the extra pages. Purely a personal preference.

Maybe there could be an option for "automatically mark threads as read when you log out." This would mean you never preserve unread threads between login sessions and others who like the newer system can continue using it.
