My 2 cents... I think a good Linux technical question (or answer) is a good Linux technical question (or answer), regardless of the browser the poster happens to be using. In contrast to the distro someone's using, which could have a bearing on a reply to the OP, knowing that they happened to be using Firefox/IE/Chrome/Opera/whatever when they posted is kind of beside the point IMHO
I still don't know how that's relevant to a Linux forum or why would I care at all.
If the programmers are gonna invest some time to add a new feature in this forum I guess that they want to implement something that's of any relevance. This is more like personal stuff that you could just drop in your signature or in your profile, so people who don't care about it don't have to get spammed with bigger load times and lots of icons on each thread page.
When the currently-in-beta feature that shows your OS icon was first introduced, it did show the browser icon as well as the OS icon. Jeremy decided to toss the browser icons and continue to evaluate the OS icons only; I can't recall the precise reason (verbatimly) for tossing the browser icon, but another moderator may, and perhaps he/she/Jeremy'll refresh our collective memory.
you had it and took it of????????
should have kept it
Not to belabor the point, but why exactly? How would a user's browser choice really make a difference in terms of the topic being discussed? LQ is very receptive to feedback, and if there is some useful, functional value in knowing what browser the poster is using, your comments would be very well received.
The only 'use' I can see for browser ID is flaming a user for their browser choice- which isn't fair, fun or productive. What if they are at work and have the browser specified? If the question is actually about browsers I'm sure the asker will specify what browser they are using.
The distro icon is useful as it gives an indication of the distro a poster is using. A browser icon has no value - it doesn't contribute to the browser agent stats which are gathered elsewhere and it's easily circumvented with any one of a number of browser agent spoofers. And it adds to the clutter in the profile bars!
Distribution: ubuntu netbook 10.04, jolicloud 1.1, and a custom one-off distro

reading the other replies to this post, there is also one other reason, if not already covered why it would not be wise to have your browser type be identified when posting. Security. I'm sure nobody using this great site are hackers, but for those that might be, it's a start to finding a way in. Believe me, I know this. Not from this site, but others like it, when being identified by a particular browser and subtypes related to it, a hacker can rather easily find a security loophole for those who haven't had the most recent security updates... I could be blowing smoke here but I doubt it...

Excellent point, IMHO. FWIW, registered members are not the only ones who visit LQ, by far. CIP~ at the time of this post, there are 71 members and 1,361 guests viewing LQ.
