Hey Jeremy.

I just took a look at the new layout, and I think it's pretty clean. Since I use Privoxy, I don't see the banners that others are talking about, so as far as I am concerned, that part is a non-issue for me.

I did not, however, see a "user login" in the sidebar. I was reading a thread, and wanted to post a reply, but had to return to the old layout to do so. Perhaps this is intentional, and the preview is simply a static demo.

Also, for the sidebar menu, perhaps you could make it a dropdown (or, since it's a sidebar, a dropout? ) bar. I have seen some that expand on mouseover, but don't know if this might be activeX or other nasty code that you are trying to avoid.

The advantage, in my eyes, is that it keeps a clean (and very slim) bar that expands over the main frame only as needed; only on mouiseover, and only until you have made your selection or moved the mouse away (much like the KDE Program menu works, only without having to click the button first.) After doing so, it returns to the bar with titles only.

That's my $0.02

I think it looks like that as it is on 2 lines at the top of the forum with the navigation buttons below. At the bottom it is all crammed into one line.

ima, I'm trying to avoid things like that for the moment.
david_ross, it should be on two lines on both the top and the bottom.

As was mentioned earlier, the white space to the right needs some filler, otherwise, I like the change. I welcome either left or right placement, it's all simply adjusting to the new look if the right is the choice; the core of LQ, the content, is obviously not changing nor effected.

I LOVE the scrolling of the code block rather than the entire page, it keeps the rest of the thread uniform.

Cool

With a little feedback from David, the bottom nav has been moved around a bit.

Cool. Here's the way I was seeing it:

I also like the scrolling of the [ code ] block.

jeremy - one final comment about the titles, the LQ home page itself still appears as "Where Linux Newbies come for help" Otherwise I think they're all cleaned up.

While on this topic, here's maybe something to consider: Make the title caption be "Where Linux users come for information" rather than "help". I suggest this due to the fact that although many of the posts still are along the lines of "How do I set up XYZ??", there's also a lot of other info available at LQ, such as the HCL, the tutuorials, the Wiki, the reviews, etc, which aren't so much "help" as they are educational. My point is just that LQ has evolved far beyond its earlier days as a site mainly focused on assisting Linux newbies, and is rapidly becoming a highly regarded source of reference materials, in addition to retaining its roots. You might want to change the caption to reflect that. Just my 2 cents. Thanks again for everything you do to keep this site so awesome -- J.W.

The homepage has been updated. Thanks again helping to track these down. As for the tagline change, what do others think?

Talking LEAVE THE BUTTONS! :)

I use those little blue upper right corner buttons all the time...keep them there. Maybe change the type of button or s/t to make it change if you gotta change s/t

Main menu's half a blue bar off of the first 'author/thread' blue bar in my browser. Should be aligned. Should be on the left if it's on there at all. I run full screen and anything scrunchy bothers me so there's no way to win there. I do like the code scrolls, though - the relevant code looks exactly how it ought and is more separated from the rest and the relevant posts look exactly how they ought to - sure it's some horizontal scrolling but it beats broken pages and *everything* needing horizontal scrolls. That's a win/win and that much I like - the rest more how it was.

Please don't remove the menu/buttons on the top right side of the page. I love them, and browsing LQ easier. If you want to remove the buttons, just change that to text links.

Forum Software

What software is used for hosting these forums? I see similarities between here, dealdatabase and tivo community and I like the format and layout. I am thinking of starting my own board, for PC's and Satellite and I was wondering.

Thanks

I think that this will get resolved but needs a bit more time to complete as the form code is pulled from several sources.

jeremy - What about a UserCP option for a left or right menu? There was also a suggestion for a menu that could be hidden on request - this could also be provided but would require the user to positively enable it so we can maintain backwards compatability with older browsers.

This has been asked many times - try searching and there is a big hint at the bottom of the page.

If enough people are interested we can look into making right vs. left a UserCP option.
