can't set restricted access

I have just purchased a D-Link DWL-G520 for my gentoo box. I compiled wireless support into my kernel, and compiled/installed the latest madwifi driver from cvs. My card is successfully detected as ath0. When I type iwconfig, I can see my airport base station, and I have a good link to it. The problem is, I can't change the security mode to restricted. I type:

iwconfig ath0 enc restricted

But when I type iwconfig again, it says the mode is still open. It is important that I am able to set the mode to shared/restricted, because airport base stations cannot do open auth. This is the last problem I face before my computer is fully functional. Can anyone tell me how to do this.

nope, sorry, thats not the issue. This persone was actually able to get iwconfig to set restricted mode. Mine gets the keys right, (entered in both ascii and text) but can't perform this critical step.
