xearth - xplanet

Hello
I'm trying to run xearth or xplanet but something is wrong.
About xearth, if running from console (as user), nothing happens, the prompt does not come back so I musy press Ctrl-C. If I run it from console (as root) I receive the following error:
---
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invalid XDM-AUTHORIZATION-1 key (failed key comparison)
Error: Can't open display: :0.0
---
About xplanet, if I run it from console (as user) I receive this error:
---
Sorry, this program was not compiled with JPEG support
Can't read day image file earth.jpg.
Map files may be obtained from the sources listed at
http://xplanet.sourceforge.net.
By default, xplanet will look for maps in the following order:
the current directory
the images subdirectory
/usr/share/xplanet/images
Use the -mapdir option to specify an alternate directory.
---
and this is the erroe if running as root:
---
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invalid XDM-AUTHORIZATION-1 key (failed key comparison)
Unknown display type.
---
Can anyone help me please?
I'm running Suse Linux 8.1 ("default" kde 3.0.3).
Thanks in advance.

Are you running them in a console within X? I just want to make sure because I'm pretty sure they don't work outside of X.

For the connection refused by server, you can do this in a console (as the user you are logged into X as):

xhost +localhost

Then switch to root with su if that's what you want and try running xearth again.

And that should work IIRC.
