I wonder what makes someone affected or not. For example, my instance of Firefox is not affected at all and I have seen others report they dont have issues either. This is unfortunate but thats kind of interesting.

Yup me too. I had a version of Firefox 66.0.3 produce the problem in a Windows 8.1 VM last night, but my main Mint 19.1 version of Firefox 66.0.3 is showing no sign of the issue at all.

I suspect that the Linux people who are affected by this are not using repo versions of Firefox such as using the tarball or using a git version or non-stable. So far every person on Linux affected that I've seen aren't using the stable version direct from a repo.

Not true in my case. I'm using the standard Slackware FF. But it seems to be OK now.
Definitely OK at my end. But I noticed just now that my home page and search engine had been switched to Google (despite having www.duckduckgo.com set as homepage in preferences). I got back to DDG, reset privacy and it worked OK, no weird messages.
