/tmp is the universal default for temp in linux. There are others, but theyre barely used.

Ive never delled anything else than
*.jpg
*.png
*.gif
*.mpg
*.mpeg
*.avi
*.mov
*.pdf
... and so on.. So, every temporary media item and other items that browsers shove there. The rest gets pretty cryptic, so ive never attempted deleting them, but it is possible tho not advisable to for eg. empty the whole /tmp/* on shutdown or so.

Suse uses /tmp but some distros use /home/user/tmp.
