removing white pixels from bi-level PDF files (xpdf fails to change the color of scanned documents)

When running:
Code:
xpdf -papercolor wheat scanned_document.pdf
The "paper" is not rendered as wheat on the display like it should be. It works quite fine on vector PDFs (i.e. not scanned documents, but PDF documents generated electronically).

So the question is-- is there a tool or relatively non-lossy script to remove the white pixels from a 1-bit raster PDF, so that the black pixels will become an overlay on a white "vector" background?
