Problem accessing windows shares using samba

I have difficulty accessing windows shares on my Lan.
When I type smb://compname,,the cursor gives a waiting sign and nothing happens even after a long time...i use suse 9.1 professional........also I can see the shares bu the command line "smbclinet -L machinename"
Can someone tell me how to fix this,,
And also how to copy the windows shares from the command line>?

Use the mount command. Lets say your share is 'test' on the computer 'testbed'. To mount it on /mnt/test, you'd do this:
mkdir /mnt/test
mount -t smbfs -o username=[your_username_on_testbed] \\\\testbed\\test /mnt/test
Then it would ask you for your password (on testbed) and it would mount. Note: you might have to do that as root, depending on how your system works. Hope That Helps.

have you tried the smb://<comp_name> including a share name too?
e.g., smb://computer1/documents

Because it needs to access an actual share, not just browse the computer. You would just use smbclient -L <ipaddress_or_compname> to see what a specific computer shares.

Vincent

I had been searching and reading and could not understand or get either the share or the printer on a WinXP desktop to be seen or used by my Suse 9.1 laptop - until I tried your simple smbclient -L command - which showed the shares (I had been listing them incorrectly the whole time) and now....

I can see the files on both machines, I can print from the laptop to the desktop.

THANK YOU
