Installing The Grub Bootloader From Rescue Disk

Hey guys, of course, when I had my Linux perfectly configured, I went in to Windows, just to update the thing, and after service pack 2, it crashed. Well, I guess that's what it's made for, ha ha!

Well, anyway, I'm going to reinstall Windows back onto the 2 gig hard drive space I give it, but after I do that, how will I get my GRUB back? I know that there's a way, using my FC3 rescue disk, but I'm usually not too good at that kind of stuff.... Below is my Grub Configuration file, located in /boot/grub/grub.conf.

Code:
# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You do not have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /, eg.
#          root (hd0,1)
#          kernel /boot/vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hda2
#          initrd /boot/initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/hda
default=0
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,1)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

	initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.10-1.741_FC3.img

	kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-1.724_FC3 ro root=LABEL=/1 rhgb quiet
	initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.9-1.724_FC3.img

	root (hd0,1)
	kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-1.667 ro root=LABEL=/1 rhgb quiet
	initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.9-1.667.img
title Windows XP
	rootnoverify (hd0,0)
	chainloader +1
All help is appreciated! Thanks once again!

Having that grub.conf is pretty handy as you can see that Fedora is on /dev/hda2 ..
root ( hd0,1 )

So you just boot up with the Fedora rescue disk and type: grub
grub> root ( hd0,1 ) ## without the spaces inside the ( )
grub> setup ( hd0 )
grub> quit
# exit

boot in to rescue mode
from ur 1st cd of fc3

follow the instruction there

chroot to ur mounted filesystem in /mnt/sysimage(fc3 mounts it automaticlly there)

chroot /mnt/sysimage

then
grub-install /dev/hda

and u r done

regards

Thanks!

Thanks, the post right after mine is the method that I chose, only because I have seen similiar elsewhere, it worked properly, I now have both Windows and Fedora! But now I am afraid to install service pack 2.

Thumbs up

Glad you got it going!
Make a backup image and it won't be so painful for the next ms crash.
