criticial: unable to open display

Hi all,
My X-window is not working properly. I don't exactly know what has.
When I try to open a program, the cursor's icon changes to the
program's icon for a few seconds but nothing happens then. When I
tried to invoke the app from the console, I receive the following
error:
*CRITIAL* Unable to open display
I haven't played with the settings recently, so I don't see the
reason. No X software can be launched (that's why I am usng lynx to
write this post!!)
Where do you suppose the problem is?
Thanks for your help!!

X itself loads though? What Window Manager are you using? What user are you using to load X? With that same user, do an:

echo $DISPLAY

before you load into X, and let us know what it says.
