ALSA config options for MPD cant control volume

as for some strange reason amarok, rythambox and banshee crash repaetedly on my suse 11 box im trying to get MPD to work

how do i set up the output to use the normal ALSA device so i can controll the volume from my media keyboard (this moves the PCM slider in kmix)

with the default file settings i get no sound.

with thease settings (below)
i get sound but its at max volume and is not controllable in software except by turing down the individual speaker channels (with a 5.1 card this is tedious and i have them set for the best sound for the room)

what do i need to set to allow me to put the sound through the PCM channel (that everything else seems to come through)

Code:
# An example configuration file for MPD
# See the mpd.conf man page for a more detailed description of each parameter.

######################### OTHER OPTIONS ########################
#
# Try disabling this if you have MP3s which appear to end
# abruptly. If this solves the problem, it is highly
# recommended that you fix your MP3s with vbrfix (available from
# <http://www.willwap.co.uk/Programs/vbrfix.php>), at which
# point you can re-enable support for gapless MP3 playback.

#gapless_mp3_playback "yes"
#
# Enable this if you wish to use your MPD created playlists in
# other music players.
