Unhappy system restore

hello
i just upgraded to 11.10 (I think, i can't be sure because i can't read it anymore) and my laptop has done nothing right since; now i can't even get the screen to light up properly (it started going dark soon after i upgraded)
can anyone make suggestions as to how i can restore my systeł to the previous version (which was great, btw!!)
cheers
eddy, thanks for your reply. model is dell vostro 1400, i don't know what graphics card it has. how can i check? i suspect that it is built-in on the motherboard . . .
what is single user mode?
jefro, i have back up but all in wondows. clean install sounds promising. if i can't figure anything else out i will try that.
thanks for your help!

You can not revert as such unless you have some backup or copy.

Consider clean install of your choice of OS.
