sound volume very low

I have RH 7.2 on dual boot with W2k. Sound is fine in the windows boot, but in linux the volume is *very* soft. Following the directions in Red Hat Linux 7.2 Bible, I went to /usr/sbin/sndconfig and verified my sound card. Linux says it is
Intel AC '97 controller. Windows says I have Sound Max integrated digital audio when I look up sound hardware. Maybe those are the same.

I used the command
aumix
to set the volume in linux, saving my settings. When I execute that command again, the old settings are back, but entering "L" (lowercase) for "load" shows me the settings as I made them before (with the volume turned up high).

How can I get my sound turned up higher?

still can't hear it

Is the answer so obvious that I am not seeing it? Does anybody know why the aumix settings don't seem to hold and/or why the sound in very soft?

Thanks,
John
