Angry Sound I/O server error


"Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
can't start sound i/o
The sound server will continue, using the null output device."

This is the message I am blessed with.....
What am I doing wrong?!!
I have a sound blaster live 5.1 sound card....
I am getting sick with frustration...

KDE and have it set to autodetect

also sound will play from xmms (but not very loud)
