shutdown problems

Whenever i try to either shutdown or reboot my computer hangs. It goes through all the sending processes the term/kill signal, etc etc, then freezes at the ok rebooting part. This happens no matter what options i specify in shutdown and reboot, and it also happens with tiny linux (slackware based) peanut linux (redhat based) and mu (redhat again). Is this perhaps an error in one of my scripts?
