setting console boot resolution

after recompiling my kernel i have lost the 1024x786 and 24k colours on my console that i used to get at boot time;
i boot up putting vga=ask to get a better resolution now but it looks crap and kinda hurts the eyes, can someone point me in the right direction to change the console back to the way i had it before?

depends which framebuffer you were using, i only know the standard vesa one, you can get the mode numbers from here, i like 0x318. but if you were using a card specific framebuffer then you'll have to read its docs.
