Pavucontrol shows that audio is playing but no output heard

Hi linuxquestions users i have a problem that has been bothering me for a week now:
I have installed debian 10 (buster)(32-bit) on an acer aspire 1610 and i am having problems with the audio card:
essentially pavucontrol tells me that sound is playing but no sound can be heard from the sink in question (my rear green jack)
The machine mounts a SIS966 audio card and an NVidia graphics card that has also audio card features (hdmi)
I couldn't care less about the NVidia card i just want the SIS card to be working

 uname -r 5.10.13
things that i know and that i've tried

Things that i know:
  • The user is in the audio group
The behaviour is present even with sudo
The tests that i've done where done with speaker-test and mpv (none working)
Things that i've tried:
  • Unmuted anything unmutable in the alsamixer
    Changed default soundcard systemwide
    Updated kernel
    Uninstalled pulseaudio (and reinstalled afterwards)
Tried same tests from various live cds (manjaro/linux mint/puppy linux fossapup)

Any guesses? thanks

I see that that machine is a "mini-tower." Does it also have a front audio output and, if so, is it working?

Have you opened the case and checked the wiring to the rear output?

The card itself is detected. I think it is a module issue:
from journalctl
Code:
    Mar 07 20:14:16 debian systemd-modules-load[204]: Inserted module 'snd_hda_intel'
    Mar 07 20:14:16 debian systemd-modules-load[204]: Inserted module 'snd_intel8x0'
Mar 07 20:14:16 debian systemd-modules-load[204]: Failed to find module 'snd-intel8x0in'

systemd blocks itself on this module (166 instances)

Thanks for the update.

This is well outside my experience, but I a web search for "snd-intel8x0in" turned up a number of links. This one looks like a good place to start.

Sorry I can't help more.

Of the two specs pages I viewed regarding Acer Aspire 1610, both say it has REALTEK ALC655 Audio controller. In which case installing firmware-realtek may be all that is required.

Disregard the my previous message, did a search and ACL655 didn't show up in the firmware package
