I'm yet to see any nVidia card using the 96.XX drives that wont work with nouveau (though you might have some issues with or find it impossible use things like s-video out).
12,04 *buntus should work just fine with nouveau. Unity might not (cant recall now) and you might get dropped back to unity 2D (while it exists anyway, its discontinued from 12.10 onward).
You might do best to d/l a xubuntu 12.04 iso (or lubuntu if you dont mind its non-LTS 'normal ubuntu release' (18 months) support status). BTW, 11.04 onward dont use gnome 2.X like 10.04/10.10, they use unity (gnome 3/shell is installable).
Why would you rollback to an unsupported version? If you really dont like unity (understanable), Xfce, Lxde or any of the other installable DEs/WMs and want gnome 2.X back, go to mint 13. It should also work with nouveau just fine, and some Mint versions use 'MATE', a gnome 2.X fork.
