How to install video driver on a LiveUSB
I want to install "nouveau" on a live USB so I may test the dirver for my system but sadly every time i install in the live envoirnment i have to reboot and when I do, the driver is again Uninstalled. Oh BTW i am using 10.10 ubuntu. I even tried UCK but it gives this error in the build log
Code:
d loUbuntu Customization Kit 2.2.1 |
10.10 is end of life, out of support since april 2012, and shouldnt be used.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases I'd get 12.04, or possibly get 10.04 if you really like gnome 2.X. Nouveau should be used by defualt with nVidia cards and 10.10. Is the video card you are using newer than 10.10? What driver is it using if its not using nouveau? |
Well the one I'm using in 10.10 is the official 96 nvidia driver. But when I go to the live desktop , the desktop seems cluttered. I just wanna check if my card works with the nouveau driver. Because I don't want to rollback to 10.10 after installing 12.04 and finding out that the card doesnot work.

I have a nouveau capable kernel on a live cd...if you just want to test your video card try
http://sourceforge.net/projects/remasterdeb/ your boot menu is normal ...not vesa |
You need to stop using live usb type installs. Use a real install to a larger usb flash drive.

12,04 *buntus should work just fine with nouveau. Unity might not (cant recall now) and you might get dropped back to unity 2D (while it exists anyway, its discontinued from 12.10 onward). You might do best to d/l a xubuntu 12.04 iso (or lubuntu if you dont mind its non-LTS 'normal ubuntu release' (18 months) support status). BTW, 11.04 onward dont use gnome 2.X like 10.04/10.10, they use unity (gnome 3/shell is installable). Why would you rollback to an unsupported version? If you really dont like unity (understanable), Xfce, Lxde or any of the other installable DEs/WMs and want gnome 2.X back, go to mint 13. It should also work with nouveau just fine, and some Mint versions use 'MATE', a gnome 2.X fork. |
@cascade9: Well If you say so... I'll take your word for it and will do the upgrade. Lets just hope it won't end up like 11.04. I tried to update 10.10 to 11.04 when it came out and the driver was a mess. Te pointer, The icons ...every thing on the desktop was distorted. and blah blah....

Wait a sec...upgrade? Then AFAIK its not a liveCD/USB, thats an installed version.
I wouldnt upgrade to 12.04 myself, I'd either do a fresh install of xubuntu/lubuntu 12.04 (or maybe even bodhi). That way you can test the .iso (and DE!) and see if yuo like it. It also means avoiding the possible problems that ubuntu upgrades can cause. |
It's similar to debian installer allows you to do base-install, select packages, expert-install, etc.
