how do I unzip .gz files?

I need to unzip a .gz file, I downloaded an unzip program but it was in a .gz format. Catch 22.
I would appreciate any help on this as I have been using Suse Linux for about 1 hour and it is kinda frustrating.
I also cannot find multimedia or open office under the start menu, all apps?
Cannot open PDF file even though it recognizes the format?

For .tar.gz, you can use "tar zxvf filename.tar.gz" (without the quotes), if it's just .gz, you may have to use the gunzip command. These commands are executed in a terminal window. For more info about tar and gunzip, type "man tar" or "man gunzip" respectively, in a terminal (and again without quotes).
