Graphics issues with Intel 82856G Graphics Adapter

I have a Dell Optiplex GX 270 that I am using at work, and it has an onboard Intel 82856 graphics card. I also have a Dell 1703 Flat Panel monitor. For some reason, if I try to change from 256 colors to thousand colors, the icons and overall environment are suddenly too big for the screen (e.g. the windows don't fit properly, only half the window is visible, icons too large, etc.). At 256 colors, it looks like junk. This is a dual boot machine, and when I boot to windows the adapter seems to handle much more than in the linux environment. I tried downloading the latest driver (took some time to find), but apparently it was a bad file. Anyone have any suggestions for me? Is downloading the latest driver even worth the effort?

How much RAM is allocated to the graphics chipset
by BIOS? And what does the screen and driver section
of your XF86Config look like?

Cheers,
Tink
