DNS is a hierarchical naming system. Every node in the domain tree has resource records associated with it. For example, www.linuxquestions.org has an A-record associated with it that specifies an IP address. This is how you can connect to other Internet machines by using just a name instead of a number.

To find out more about the Domain Name System, go to www.google.com and search for "Domain Name System".
