I have just recently installed Ubuntu and it will let me connect wirelessly but not thru ethernet. It works fine both ways with windows can't seem to figure it out.

Is this a way of saying that the wireless ethernet works but the wired ethernet doesn't?
Hi,
First of all I want to ask whether you have disconnected from the wireless network before connecting through ethernet ?
If you are on a laptop I would suggest turning off your wireless card, rebooting and then trying again.
You shouldn't have to shut down wireless to connect with a wire, but shutting it down for testing/troubleshooting has it's merits. (unless you need to read tutorials etc while troubleshooting)
To see if the hardware is detected at all try lspci. ifconfig should also list the ethernet device, if it has been detected and set up. (it'll show the MAC but no ip)
Of course the first step is try a different wire, a different port on the router or what have you... the ground up stuff.
