Wink trying to connect to internet via ethernet

Hi my name is Karen and I'm a newbie when it comes to setting up laptops.I have a dell latitude d600 and I cannot connect to internet.I have high speed internet with Cox cable.I have another laptop(insiron 1100).The inspiron is just fine.It connects to interet normal.I just bought the latitude d600 a few days ago.I ordered a 2100 mini pc card 801.11b09y200.Will this card enable me to connect to the internet? Please help.

Did the kernel give you a network interface at all (i.e., the output of “ifconfig -a”)? What’s the chipset of your NIC (i.e., the output of “lspci”)? What exactly happens when you plug the ethernet cable into the network jack of your laptop? Might it work if you boot the laptop while the cable is plugged in? Is there anything between the laptop and the cable modem (e.g., router)? What distro are you using? The WiFi card will not help unless you have some sort of wireless access point to which to connect.

I tried ipconfig/all and typed the ip address and it still did not connect.I tried ping and that didn't work(no internet). When I plug the ethernet into laptop and try to connect in enables (connection)it under device manager screen.Still doesn't connect to internet.I have no router yet.what do you mean by distro?

Are you using windows…

(if so, a mod will move this out of the linux networking forum.)

Distro - linux distribution i.e. Fedora, Mandriva, SuSE, slackware, Ubuntu etc.
As posted it appears your running windows since ipconfig is a windows command.

Typically Cox basic package only provides one dynamic IP address. Since your not
using a router you will have to recycle power to the modem each time you swap laptops so the MAC of last connected device is removed from its memory. In a nutshell, the MAC is a unique number for each ethernet adapter. It is possible to clone the MAC so repowering the modem is not necessary but it depends on the ethernet adapter driver. There could be other windows utilities out there that can clone a MAC too.

Windows device manager should indicate if the device and driver are working correctly.

Yes, both computers will be able to connect to the internet. Your router will have one internet IP address that is assigned by Cox. Then the router will assign private IP addresses (depends on unit) typically in the 192.168.xxx.xxx range. Most computers are automatically setup with DHCP which automatically assigns an IP address, sets nameserver and gateway information.

For security I would encrypt your wireless connection and limit connectivity to only your laptops.

Does the wireless adapter properties show a valid IP address? (ipconfig)
It is easier to test the wireless connection without encryption.
