Black screen at boot after installing Nvidia driver

Recently I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3. Almost everything had been working well. One small problem was the display. After a few minutes of no activity, the monitor screen would go black instead of showing a screensaver and would occasionally flash the message: 1: Analog Input Cannot Display this Video Mode.

I opened Driver Manager, where a nouveau driver was selected but nvidia-352 was recommended. I selected that then Apply Changes, cache was updated, the driver was installed, and the message was to reboot. When I do that, as soon as the Mint logo comes up the the screen goes black (it seems that the the monitor turns off) but the computer-on indicator light stays on. I’ve pressed the various buttons on the monitor but it doesn’t turn on. What should I try to solve this problem?

Hi:

Have a look at this link there are a number of things you can try.

https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/842

A handful of members here had trouble with the Cinnamon DE so they installed Mate and the problem went away.

What graphics card do you have? Run this to find out-
Code:
lspci | grep -i VGA

Black screen at boot after installing Nvidia driver

Thanks Ztcoracat for that information. Following helpful advice received at https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtop...?f=59&t=218834, I got the message: The X server is now disabled. Restart MDM when it is configured correctly. I ended up at a tty1 prompt and don’t know how to proceed from there.

From my documentation, the graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GT 610 GPU.

It’s looking like attempting to solve this problem might be more complicated and time-consuming than installing another Mint OS. Mate DE would probably be my third choice. Do you know whether Mint KDE would solve the problem?

Ctrl+alt+F2 or Ctrl+F3 may take you back to you DE and the GUI.
If not in tty type:
Code:
startx
Running startx may put your Mint in Software Rendering Mode. <OR> it may not work as long as the X server is disabled. To manually start the Xserver run as root:
Code:
/etc/init.d/xdm restart
If that doesn't work I don't know how to fix Xorg.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=931354

Xorg may need configured, I'm not good with that.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=931354

Here's a SOLVED thread to fix the "The X server is now disabled. Restart MDM when it is configured correctly" problem.
https://forums.techguy.org/threads/s...namon.1084570/

Installing the Mate or KDE DE could help. As I mentioned before Cinnamon wasn't running right for other members here and installing Mate fixed it.

The new Linux Mint 17.3 'Mate' is very nice I installed it today on a friends pc.
I know you said Mate would be your third choice but KDE is just as nice I'm sure.

Didn't work.
Code:
startx
The output started with the message that the file
Code:
.Xauthority does not exist
and ended with
Code:
unable to connect to x server: connection refused
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/xdm restart
gave
Code:
command not found
I had configured Xorg as per instructions given in the other forum, then when I tried to reboot got the message:
Code:
The X server is now disabled. Restart MDM when it is configured correctly.
I'm in tty1 with the computer's name and my username at the prompt. What do you reckon?

I've read through the Ubuntu forum links you kindly provided and they take me no further than I've already gone. The Linux Mint tutorial link offers a very different approach to what I've done and at this stage I'm hesitant about possibly messing up the progress that's been made.

I'll search for info about configuring MDM and see how that goes.

Sorry those instructions in the links didn't work for you.

The last time that I was stuck in tty w/o a gui I did a fresh install because I wasn't able to fix what it was or find what was either missing or broken.

Installing the AMD catalyst proprietary driver for my graphics card (radeon)worked one time for me.
I was fortunate as the driver was sitting in the Downloads directory and I was able to install it.
I've installed graphic's drivers before and it hosed my gui's in the past.
To this day I still haven't figured out what causes that.

If you don't have the driver on your system download it. It's a .run file.

Here is the link to the Nvidia GeForce GT 610 driver for Linux.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-d...-295.53-driver

If installing the driver doesn't help and you can't connect to the Xserver than the only thing left is to reinstall your distro. Remember I don't know how to reconfigure or fix the Xorg but other members here I'm sure can.(if that's the problem)

As you probably know, to install the Nvidia drivers for Linux you need to stop the x server.

Black screen at boot after installing Nvidia driver

What solved the non-booting into the Desktop was to remove and re-create the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file I had created and configured earlier. First thing I did was to check in Driver Manager to see that the recommended nvidia—352 driver was installed. A few minutes later, the menu and the applications and directories in the panel wouldn’t open. Only the right-click actions worked. The Computer and Home icons that used to be on the Desktop were no longer there.

I rebooted and turned the computer off and on a few times — same thing. I’m inclined to re-install the OS. After more reading and given previous experience with KDE and Xfce (as well as Gnome 2 & 3, Unity, & Cinnamon), I’m thinking Linux Mint Xfce.

Thanks again for all your help.

Black screen at boot after installing Nvidia driver

I have a GUI, but the things mentioned in my previous post aren't working. My monitor is old and limited while the computer is new and powerful. Someone at the other forum believes that the monitor could be faulty and I'm inclined to agree. It's something I've been considering for some time and this has motivated me to finally order a new monitor. So I don't intend to do anything further with that computer until the monitor arrives and hopefully resolves the problems. If not, I'll probably reinstall an OS.

A new monitor should help and with it you can adjust the resolution to what you want.
Hopefully a you won't have to perform a fresh install. BTDT-

Funny that we are talking about gui's. Mine just crashed so I'm trying to understand how to fix the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

One of those strange coincidences. I was given helpful advice at the other forum about xorg.conf. You may want to have a look at https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtop...8834&p=1147033

Black screen at boot after installing Nvidia driver

The new monitor is connected, but the last set of problems persists: the menu, the applications and directories in the panel don't open, and the Computer and Home icons that used to be on the desktop aren't there. Any suggestions?
