Will this upgrade work?

Hello.

I'm upgrading a laptop. It's the HP Pavillion DV5000. It has a 128GB hard drive I want to replace with an SSD. I was thinking 256GB, mSata SSD, inside an adapter, so it fits into the device which is PATA/IDE, I think. I'll know exactly tomorrow when I open it up

Would this work?

Thanks for your help.

Mars

As long as it's compatible with the motherboard, I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

Just my two cents.

Yes, in general it should work. But probably I would use an 512GB SSD (or 1TB).

Mars Bar,

Welcome to LQ forums.

Your HP Pavilion has a SATA drive connector:

Either use mSATA SSD with an adapter such as this:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Multibao-Ad...6406845&sr=8-3

or simply use a SSD similar to this:

There's little difference in speed between a M2 SSD in adapter & a standard SSD, but the standard SSD will be cheaper, so you can get a bigger drive for the same price.

How do you know it's got a SATA drive? I thought it was ide. I'll have to have a look. Update: it's a PATA old school drive.

Mars Bar,

Some of the HP Pavilion DV5000 laptops had IDE and others had SATA connections.

I guess you need an adapter similar to this one:
